Teatro Olimpico

Teatro Olimpico

The magnificent Teatro Olimpico is considered Palladio's most important urban masterpiece. The construction of the theatre started in 1580, when Palladio himself was 72, yet it was not completed until after 5 years later when Vicenzo Scamozzi overtook the project. This covered theatre is the first one of its kind in Europe. Its structure was inspired by the ancient theatres. The half-moon shaped seating area, which can accommodate up to 1000 persons, resembles an ancient arena. Due to the use of the permanent stage curtain and trompe l'oleil, the latter added after his death; the stage creates an impression for amazing depth. With its ancient Thebes decoration, the scene creates the feeling of being in a classic outdoor amphitheatre. Presently, the theatre holds a number of drama, music, and other performances throughout the year.

Palazzo Chiericati

Palazzo Chiericati

Another splendid Palladian legacy is Palazzo Chiericati, which presently accommodates the Municipal Museum. The palace is designed similarly to Palladio's country villas, which he is much renowned for. Its elegant two-tired façade is topped with various statues. Inside you will find a comprehensive collection of Venetian fine art. Among the most famous paintings here are the works of Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Veronese and other masters from the Venetian art school.
